Basic Definition

Mechanical Tappets (Solid Tappets)

Solid, rigid component with no hydraulic mechanism.

Hydraulic Tappets

Contains an internal hydraulic plunger, check valve, and oil chamber

that uses engine oil pressure to self-adjust.

Valve Lash Clearance

Mechanical:

Must have a fixed valve lash (clearance) to allow for thermal expansion.

Requires manual adjustment.

Hydraulic:

Automatically maintains zero lash using oil pressure.

No adjustment needed.

Noise
